沈美露,出生於新北烏來,渼潞工作坊負責人。三百年來,現代化的腳步疾速前進,烏來的樣貌早已與過往大相逕庭,泰雅族人們的生活也隨之改變。少有原民勇士在山林狩獵,也沒有泰雅婦女坐在門前,悉心織著布。現今,在烏來老街,隨處可見的是賣香腸、原民料理的餐廳,僅有少數幾間販售泰雅手工藝品的藝品店。九二一大地震後藝術家回到家鄉-烏來,踏上了織女的路,愛上了族人織藝與手工藝的文化與精神,「XO」紅黑白相間的圖騰常用在服飾、包包等配件。藝術家重拾耆老的織布技術與傳統,讓美麗的布匹成為生活的依靠,更延續了泰雅織布文化。
Shen Mei-lu was born in New Taipei City’s Wulai District. She’s in charge of the Mei Lu workshop. With modernization progressing at breakneck speed over the past 300 years, Wulai no longer looks as it used to, and the lives of the Atayal people have changed as well. There are now few Atayal braves who venture into the mountains to hunt, and Atayal women no longer sit by their doors making intricate weavings. Now, on the old streets of Wulai, everywhere you see stores selling sausages and Indigenous cuisine and only a few merchants that still carry traditional Atayal handicrafts. After Taiwan’s Jiji earthquake in 1999, Shen returned to her home in Wulai and began her journey as a weaving artist. She fell in love with her people’s culture and spirit of weaving and handcrafted artworks, and the “XO” pattern in alternating colors of red, black, and white appears often on her garments, bags, and other accessories. Being a great Atayal artist, Shen revived the old, traditional weaving techniques and helped make the beautiful clothes part of everyday life again, ensuring that Atayal weaving culture will live on.
