This piece is part of my series, Viewing Taiwan from the Sea, which I began in 2014. It depicts the Elephant Trunk Rock along the coast of Ruifang, New Taipei City. This well-known landmark once attracted many visitors and was considered a cherished, private spot by many. One day in 2023, the Elephant Trunk Rock unexpectedly collapsed, and its long trunk vanished into the waves. This event symbolizes the impermanence of natural laws—just as the Earth’s layers are pushed upward, eroded, and collapsed. It is part of the cyclical movement of the universe. We can also look forward to the emergence of another animal-shaped rock, sculpted by time, either along the coast or in the mountains. The cosmic energy continues to move, cycle, evolve, and renew, always bringing with it new surprises and beauty.
